It is a transfer case that has 4 settins instead of three normal ones. Has 2hi, 4hi, 4low and auto. Auto setting is used alot for rain or snow. When you hit the gas in auto mode and the rear tires spin faster than the front it kicks in the front tires and they spin too.

They're kind a a pain since you have to get out to lock up the front hubs, but it does keep the front diff disengaged rolling down the road and the 4wd works really well when locked in. Pretty sure GM and dodge HD trucks have proper 4wd as well.
